Reaping the Whirlwind: Al Qa’ida and the Holy War

Publisher: Pluto Press

ISBN: 0745319157

edition 2003

First published weeks before Al Qa’ida became the most reviled Islamist movement in history, this thoroughly updated edition of Michael Griffin’s acclaimed book provides a cradele-to-grave narrative of Afghanistan’s Taliban movement, its relationship with Osama bin Laden, the hatching of the September 11 conspiracy and the war that followed the destruction of the World Trade Center.

Reaping the Whirlwind now includes:

* A blow-by-blow account of the September 11 hijackings, the FBI’s failure to apprehend the main protagonists and the ambivalence of the Bush administration to the threat from Al Qa’ida during its first nine months in office

  • An examination of the financial ties that link key figures in the Bush administration with the Saudi sponsors of Osama bin Ladin, Central Asia’s energy bonanza, the cover-up of the BCCI bankruptcy case during the George Bush Senior administration and the bank’s role in fostering Islamist extremism and funding the anti-Soviet jihad
  • Detailed analysis of the US war in Afghanistan, with critical examinations of the battles of Kunduz, Tora Bora and Shah-I-Kot; the Pentagon’s use of vicious warlords to shield American troops; and evidence of Washington’s dubious commitment to the region’s other recent model of regime-change and reconstruction
  • Profiles of all the chief players in the Afghanistan saga, from Mullah Mohammed Omar and Osama bin Laden to the assassinated resistance leader Ahmed Shah Massoud and the new head of state, Hamid Karzai

Griffin dissects the tangle of policies, ideologies, events and personalities that led to the destruction of the World Trade Center and the new panorama of the ‘war on terrorism’. Written with energy and authority, “Reaping the Whirlwind” provides a meticulous narrative of indelible events that historians, students, journalists and commentators will find an essential work of reference for years to come.

Optimizing Russian Natural Gas

Publisher: International Energy Agency

2006-07

ISBN 9264109862

Sinopse:

The world’s largest gas producer and exporter, Russia has an enormous energy saving potential. At least 30 billion cubic meters – a fifth of Russian exports to European OECD countries – could be saved every year by enhanced technology or energy efficiency. As the era of cheap gas in Russia comes to an end, this potential saving is increasingly important for Russians and importing countries. As domestic gas prices increase, efficiency investments will become increasingly economic not to mention the incentive for Gazprom to enhance its efficiency against a backdrop of high European gas prices. “Optimising Russian Natural Gas: Reform and Climate Policy” analyses and estimates the potential savings and the associated reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in the oil extraction (flaring), gas transmission and distribution sectors. Achieving these savings will require linking long-standing energy efficiency goals with energy sector reforms, as well as climate policy objectives.

The book also describes Russia’s emerging climate policy and institutional framework, including work still ahead before the country is eligible for the Kyoto Protocol’s flexibility mechanisms and can attract financing for greenhouse gas reductions. It stresses the need for Russia to tap the full potential of energy savings and greenhouse gas emission reductions through a more competitive environment in the gas sector to attract timely investments.

The 23rd Psalm

Synopse:

A Psalm of David

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures;

He leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul;

He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me;

Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies;

Thou anointed my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life;

And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Psalm 23, Jewish Family Bible

The 23rd Psalm: A Holocaust Memoir

This was one of the most powerful memoirs of the many Holocaust stories that I have read. It was difficult to put it down, and when I did, I had to take time out to contemplate what I had just read. One of its strengths is the author’s continuous attention to details and facts, giving us a day by day, month by month, and year by year account of what his and his fellow Jews’ daily life and subsequent sufferings were like. It is, in fact, so detailed that the reader feels like he/she is right there in his hometown of Tyczyn as he passes his boyhood surrounded by the love of his family….then with the Nazi invasion, the descent into the abyss begins as each day brings new heartbreak, new difficulties. The author has an extraordinary ability to describe emotions so that the reader can feel within himself just how the parents felt, how his fellow prisoners felt as they suffered and were brutally killed.

The memoir is a searing indictment of 2,000 years of Christianity and its utter failure as the fabric of society is torn asunder under the Nazi occupation. The simple one and a half page of the Prologue left me angry and emotional as the author describes how even today the Poles reject any ties to centuries of Jewish culture and their former “neighbors”. Throughout this tragic story the author relates in simple but graphic detail how the “Christian” Poles stood by and jeered, laughed, threw stones, and showed utter contempt for the Jews and their terrible suffering as they passed by and were beaten and shot by the German and Ukrainian guards. Even worse were the Poles and Ukrainians who hunted down Jews as they tried to escape and either killed them or turned them into the Gestapo.

The most sobering aspect is that what happened in this book, one man’s attempt to survive in conditions so terrible and dehumanizing that it takes courage to even read it all, is that this happened in countless towns, in countless families, to countless innocent men, women, and children simply because they belonged to a group that was condemned. It became “ok” to discriminate, then humiliate, then beat, then kill and finally annihilate. What is the lesson to be learned? The chilling and sad answer is that the world has in many respects learned nothing. This powerful story is an indictment of humanity itself.

Approaching Ottoman History An Introduction to the Sources

Suraiya Faroqhi is one of the most important economic and social histor-ians of the pre-modern Ottoman empire writing today. Her scholarlycontribution to the field has been prodigious. Her latest book, ApproachingOttoman History: An Introduction to the Sources, represents a summation ofthat scholarship, an introduction to the state-of-the-art in Ottoman his-tory, or as the author herself describes it, ‘a sharing’ of her own fascinationwith the field. In a compelling and lucid exploration of the ways thatprimary and secondary sources can be used to interpret history, the authorreaches out to students and researchers in the field and in related disciplinesto help familiarise them with these documents. By considering botharchival and narrative sources, she explains to what ends they wereprepared, encouraging her readers to adopt a critical approach to theirfindings, and disabusing them of the notion that everything recorded inofficial documents is necessarily accurate or even true. Her critique of thehandbook treatments of Ottoman history, quite often the sources studentsrely on most frequently during their undergraduateyears, provides insightsinto the broader historical context. While the book is essentially a guide toa rich and complex discipline for those about to embark upon theirresearch, the experienced Ottomanist can expect to find much that is newand provocative in this candid and sophisticated interpretation of the field.SURAIYA.

FAROQHI is Professor of Ottoman Studies in theDepartment of Near Eastern Studies at Ludwig Maximilians Universität inMunich. Her many publications include Pilgrims and Sultans (1994) andKultur and Alltag im Osmanischen Reich (1995). She is a contributor to HalilInalcik (with Donald Quataert), An Economic and Social History of theOttoman Empire, 1300–1914 (1994).

«Historical Dictionary of U.S. Diplomacy since the Cold War (Historical Dictionaries of U.S. Diplomacy)»

The Scarecrow Press, Inc.

ISBN: 0810856352

2007

DESCRIPTION The post-Cold War diplomacy of the United States evolved in stages that reflected changes in the international system. Through the 1990s, the nation’s foreign affairs were marked by an evolution away from the post-World War II focus on security and superpower competition to a more multifaceted and nuanced series of policies that included economic concerns, social and cultural issues, and environmental matters. However, an escalating series of terrorist attacks that culminated in the 11 September 2001 strikes on New York and Washington, D.C. led to the reemergence of security as the main foreign policy issue for the United States. The subsequent American-led “war on terror” mirrored the Cold War in its goals, and the administration of President George W. Bush endeavored to build a multinational counterterrorism coalition that paralleled the Western alliance of the bipolar era.The Historical Dictionary of U.S. Diplomacy Since the Cold War is a concise overview of the main figures, conflicts, events, and policies of the United States in the post-Cold War era. The study explores the main elements of U.S. foreign policy and the regional and international reaction to American policies from the presidency of George H. W. Bush to that of George W. Bush. Through its entries, the book analyzes the underlying themes of U.S. diplomacy and the new policies formulated and implemented in response to broad changes in global politics. The book includes a chronology of events from 1991 to 2007, an introduction that highlights important themes of the era, cross-referenced entries on significant topics, a detailed bibliography, and appendixes of major documents. The work is ideal for both public and academic libraries, the general public, or the specialist looking for a reference tool in this area. Ever since the terrorist attack in the United States on September 112001, people have seen and heard the name bin Laden in the media. As one of the founders of Al Qaeda, he is readily identified as one of the reader of a group seemingly intent on harming the United States as much as possible.For readers puzzled about bin Laden himself, this book by Adam Robinson answers many questions about him and his beliefs. Traveling to a number of countries, including Saudi Arabia Bahrain, Oman, Libya, Lebanon, and Pakistan, to gather information on bin Laden’s activities, presents a biography of his subject which is thoroughly researched and comprehensive in nature.He shows, for example, how bin Laden grew up as a member of a wealthy Saudi family. In his early years, he indulges himself with worldly pleasures. Initially, it might be puzzling to some, reconciling that image of bin Laden with that of the zealot he projects through the world’s media today.However, as Vise demonstrates, his experiences in Afghanistan, fighting against the Soviets served as a catalyst to bring about a transformation in him and his outlook on life. And even though he works hard at presenting himself a certain way to the world at large, Vise argues that there still are basic contradictions evident in his behavioral patterns.Piercing through the skillfully manipulated images of himself that bin Laden projects to the world, Vise offers a telling, more accurate portrait of who he is. Madonnas’s Sex Book

Sex is a highly-designed coffee table book written by Madonna with photographs by Steven Meisel Studio and film frames shot by Fabien Baron, released October 21, 1992 by Warner Books. The book was released by Madonna as an accompaniment to her fifth studio album Erotica, which was released a day earlier (October 20, 1992). The extremely controversial book featured strong adult content and softcore pornographic photographs depicting simulations of sexual acts, which included lesbianism, male homosexuality, sadomasochism, anilingus, and rape. Madonna wrote all of the erotica in the book as a character named Mistress Dita, inspired by the silent film actress Dita Parlo. Featured in the book, aside from unknown faces, are model Naomi Campbell, actress Isabella Rossellini, rappers Big Daddy Kane and Vanilla Ice, gay porn star Joey Stefano, actor Udo Kier, the European socialite Tatiana von Furstenberg, and nightclub owner Ingrid Casares. For the release Madonna gave a party at New York City’s Industria Superstudio, for which she attended dressed as Little Bo Peep with a stuffed toy lamb. Aside from Steven Meisel himself, photographers from his studio were also employed. The book credits Michael Stratton, Darren Lew, Line Barzudkas, Stephen Callaghan, and Chris Hobson. Fabien Baron, one of the book’s designers, also shot many of the photo sessions on film (mostly on Super 8 mm), with many film frames taken from this footage being used in the book.

The Man Behind the Microchip

Oxford University Press, USA

ISBN: 0195163435

440 pages

Hailed as the Thomas Edison and Henry Ford of Silicon Valley, Robert Noyce was a brilliant inventor, a leading entrepreneur, and a daring risk taker who piloted his own jets and skied mountains accessible only by helicopter. Now, in The Man Behind the Microchip, Leslie Berlin captures not only this colorful individual but also the vibrant interplay of technology, business, money, politics, and culture that defines Silicon Valley. Here is the life of a giant of the high-tech industry, the co-founder of Fairchild Semiconductor and Intel who co-invented the integrated circuit, the electronic heart of every modern computer, automobile, cellular telephone, advanced weapon, and video game.

With access to never-before-seen documents, Berlin paints a fascinating portrait of Noyce: he was an ambitious and intensely competitive multimillionaire who exuded a ‘just folks’ sort of charm, a Midwestern preacher’s son who rejected organized religion but would counsel his employees to ‘go off and do something wonderful,’ a man who never looked back and sometimes paid a price for it. In addition, this vivid narrative sheds light on Noyce’s friends and associates, including some of the best-known managers, venture capitalists, and creative minds in Silicon Valley. Berlin draws upon interviews with dozens of key players in modern American business–including Andy Grove, Steve Jobs, Gordon Moore, and Warren Buffett; their recollections of Noyce give readers a privileged, first-hand look inside the dynamic world of high-tech entrepreneurship.

A modern American success story, The Man Behind the Microchip illuminates the triumphs and setbacks of one of the most important inventors and entrepreneurs of our time.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Paul Johnson says that writing A History of the Jews was like writing a history of the world “seen from the viewpoint of a learned and intelligent victim.” Johnson’s history begins with the Bible and ends with the establishment of the State of Israel. Throughout, Johnson’s history is driven by a philosophical interest: “The Jews,” he writes, “stand right at the centre of the perennial attempt to give human life the dignity of a purpose. Does their own history suggest that such attempts are worth making? Or does it reveal their essential futility?” Johnson’s history is lucid, thorough, and–as one would expect of almost any project with such a broad scope–a little wrong-headed. By the end of the book, readers will be grateful for Johnson’s questioning of the Jews’ confidence in their cosmic significance. However, readers may also be a little annoyed by his energetic inquiries as to whether this significance was man-made or providentially provided. Either way, it’s a given: for a historian of Israel, this should adequately settle the question. Johnson’s 600-page history is probably the best we’ve got by a living gentile–which is no small accomplishment at all. —Michael Joseph Gross
